The Spanish population does not rest properly. It is estimated that at some point or stage all people have been able to suffer some episode of insomnia, but that in some people they are chronicled and affected both physically and psychologically. According to one study, sleep disorders affect 20.8 per cent of Spanish adults, the highest prevalence in women than in men and even requiring sleeping drugs. Insomnia is defined as a persistent difficulty in the start of sleep, its duration, consolidation or quality that occurs despite the existence of appropriate circumstances and which is accompanied by discomfort or deterioration of social, labor, academic or behavioral areas.
Sleeping is an absolutely essential physiological need for physical and mental health. During sleep the organism activates a series of mechanisms of repair and segregates hormones essential for these processes. One of the most studied hormones in relation to sleep-vigilia cycles is melatonin hormone.

Properties of active principles:

- Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone synthesized in the body from the essential amino acid tripptophan that through various processes becomes serotonin in a first step, and finally melatonin. Its main action is of inducing sleep (start) although it also modulates the peripheral clocks, distributed throughout the body, which makes it a marker of the circadian rhythms. Melatonin synthesis is not constant throughout life. Production begins at 3 or 4 months of age. Its levels are increasing throughout childhood, reaching the maximum between 8 and 10 years and with puberty synthesis is reduced. After 40-45 years it gradually decreases, and in over 70 years the levels do not exceed 10% of those presented in adolescence. But in melatonin levels not only influences age, also light. In healthy individuals the synthesis of melatonin begins to darken, since light is the main factor regulating the secretion of melatonin. Maximum between midnight and 2-3h in the morning. Synthesized form, high levels of melatonin in blood inform that it is at night to organs and tissues and help organize the circadian rhythms and the vigil-sleep cycles. Melatonin induces sleep, reducing time to reconcile it, improves its quality and even relieves symptoms of defase schedule (jet lag), for example on a transoceanic journey.
Melatonin hormone is given by mouth, for example as a dietary supplement, and is indicated in sleep disorders, such as insomnia.
Insomnia may increase the risk of heart failure, stroke, or stroke, according to studies. So beyond the “classical” consequences of little sleep such as irritability, lack of concentration, food cravings, tiredness or drowsiness, among others, a repairing dream is fundamental and at this point a series of medicinal plants have proved to be useful.

- California Amapola

The California poppy (Eschscholtzia californica) contains mainly alkaloids (pavinas, protopines, benzofenantridines, bencilisoquinoleins ...) as well as flavonoids, phytoesteroles and carotenoids.
The monograph of the German E Commission and EMA (European Medicine Agency) describes the traditional use of this plant to prolong sleep, especially in combination with other plants (such as valerian root or pasiflora), and as a sedative, helping to relieve nervous agitation and irritability, two factors that sometimes produce or derive in sleep disorders.

- Valerian

Known as cat grass, valerian (Valeriana officinalis) stands out for its content in essential oil, monoterpenes, iridoids and sesquiterpenos ( valerenic acid, valeranona or valerenal). It also contains gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), glutamine and arginine in appreciable concentration.
Studies show that the valerian root has sedative and sleep-inducing activity, showing that valerian improves sleep quality, with no related side effects. This action relates to the ability of the valerian root extract to favor the release of the GABA (the main inhibitor neurotransmitter of the Central Nervous System).
In addition, preliminary studies show that the combination of valerian with hops could be recommended for the treatment of insomnia. Given the good work done by both plants in synergy, Dormigran integrates in its formula dry extract of hops.

- Lip

Used since ancient times as a medicinal plant and later for the manufacture of beer, this plant is rich in phenolic compounds.
Current studies are aimed at demonstrating that the combination of valerian extracts with hops improve the “sleep quantity” during the night helping to keep it. And it is that the EMA itself describes that the indications of the hop are similar to those of the valerian root in terms of improving sleep disorders and helps to recover calm by reducing nervous tension. The hop shows relaxing and sedative activity, whose mechanism of action is associated with its ability to increase the activity of acid-gamma-aminobutyric neurotransmitter (GABA) responsible for “passing” the state of vigil, partially inhibiting the activity of central nervous system. It thus demonstrates its ability to preserve the activity of the circadian rhythm by helping to keep the night sleep.

Main uses:

Sleep problems and disorders.
Occasional or transitory insomnia (by stress, anxiety, sentimental crises, labor or economic problems, high consumption of stimulating substances...).
Chronified insomnia (when it lasts more than 1 month) that causes physical and cognitive impairment.
Minor disorders of the nervous system, restlessness, nervousness that may result in sleep disturbances.
In transoceanic travels, to reduce the feeling of jet lag.
