Valeriana (Valeriana officinalis) is the grouping of a series of plants with a different degree of ploidism. Thus, the diploid type is the Valeriana officinalis, which is characterized by being a herbaceous plant with the hollow stem that has basal leaves in rosette and opposite on the stem, all with 11 to 19 foliolos of the same size. The flowers are grouped into terminal cymosa inflorescences, and can be pink or white.

The root presents an unpleasant smell, is formed by a cylindrical rhizome (50 x 30 mm) of yellowish colour covered by numerous roots of small diameter (1 to 3 mm) and accompanied by stungs in the nudes. In its chemical composition, sesquiterpenos and iridoids stand out. Of the sesquiterpenos the most important are the Valerian Acid and Hydroxyvalerenic as a characterization of the poorly preserved roots. Among the iridoids we have the Valepotriato, which is between 0.8 and 1.7% of the dry weight, and which is held responsible for the properties of Valeriana. Traditionally it is used to favor sleep and relaxation and its effects have been contrasted by both scientific studies and popular praxis.
